A Brief History of PORA

The Park Orchards Ratepayers Association was formed in the late 1960's by residents to protect, maintain and improve the unique and picturesque character of the suburb.
Through the Park Orchards Ratepayers Association, community action led to the Council, with State and Federal funding, purchasing 'The 100 Acres', which contains flora and fauna that was native to the area before the intrusion of settlers. Many proposed changes that would have spoilt the 'village' community of Park Orchards, such as extensive freeway access, an obtrusive telephone tower, high voltage power lines and high density housing proposals were successfully opposed.
With the growth of the population by the 1970's transport facilities were inadequate. With the assistance of Park Orchards Ratepayers Association a bus service, connecting Park Orchards directly to the city of Melbourne was obtained in 1983.
The association encourages all local residents to become members and elect committee representatives at the Annual General Meeting. PORA also schedules 3 General Meetings per annum. The annual joining fee is $5 per person or $10 per family.
